Asterix & Obelix XXL 3 – The Crystal Menhir | Mini Review

What is it?

Asterix & Obelix XXL 3 – The Crystal Menhir is an adventure game developed by Osome Studio and published by Microids. The titular protagonist Asterix and his portly chum Obelix are two incredibly strong Gaulish warriors from the year 50 B.C. All but one village in Gaul has been taken over by the snobbish Romans legionnaire. The duo are requested to acquire a crystal menhir, said to have mysterious and wondrous powers.

Cartoony visuals.
Special moves are pretty effective, and can be upgraded at the shops.
Some attempts to break up the monotony, e.g. running across a wrecked ship while avoiding strong winds.
Dull, unfunny dialogue that becomes annoying very quickly.
Dodgy hitboxes means enemies can hit you from slightly further away.
Useless collectibles and few health pickups.
The combat is mindlessly repetitive and your companion AI is useless.
Boring fetch quests that you get shoved into without being asked for your consent first.

Aren’t adventures supposed to be thrilling and exciting? Asterix & Obelix XXL 3 doesn’t seem to realize this. It falls short in so many ways. Co-operative mode may be more tolerable than playing solo, only because the companion AI is borked. There’s little reason to swipe this one up, so just stick with the cartoons or comics if you want to see the Gaulish lads brawling with Caesar’s armies.
