Shantae & the Pirate’s Curse | Mini Review!

What is it?

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is a platform game developed and published by WayForward. Stripped of her half-genie magic, the titular protagonist must work with the nefarious pirate Risky Boots in order to prevent the resurrection of an evil revenant known as the Pirate Master. Shantae must explore multiple islands in order to absorb Dark Magic left by mutated copies of Risky’s pirate crew.

Platform(s)

PC, PS4, Switch, 3DS, Wii U, Xbox One

Pros
Cons
Amazing pixel graphics and character artwork during cutscenes. Hilarious jokes and solid writing.
Combat and movement is more fun and convenient than before thanks to the pirate gear you can find.
Metroid-vania level layout is more compact and enjoyable to explore, with plenty of secret areas.
Another fantastic, dance-inducing OST by Jake Kaufman.
Bonus mode lets you replay the game with all of the gear.
Backtracking is a pain no thanks to respawning enemies.
Can only fast-travel to the beginning of each island.
The spike-filled area leading up to the final boss is insanely difficult.

Verdict:

A mesmerizing experience in almost every sense of the word, Shantae & the Pirate’s Curse tops its predecessor multiple times over. It’s more accessible, too, but it doesn’t stop itself from putting up a challenge thanks to its complex level design and thrilling gameplay.
