Wolfenstein 3D: Lost Episodes | Mini Review

What is it?

Wolfenstein 3D: Lost Episodes is an map pack for the aforementioned first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Apogee Software and FormGen. These two additional chapters, ‘Return to Danger’ and ‘Ultimate Challenge’, are prequels to the main game. Set in World War II, super-soldier B.J. Blazkowicz must manouver through numerous labyrinths and defeat the bosses at the end of each chapter in order to thwart the Nazi war machine’s diabolical plans.

Can be mindlessly fun in quick bursts.
New textures make certain rooms stand out more.
Palette swaps and sound replacements for specific weapons and enemies.
Levels are even more confusing than before, some exits are hidden by secret areas.
Blue guns – why?
So many ugly, blue textures.
Overwhelming number of enemies.
Doesn’t improve the core game in any way.

If you’ve missed out on playing these episodes, don’t fret. They can be about as fun as a swift kick in the goolies at times, considering how confusing and oppressive each level can be. Otherwise, it’s not that much better from the main game, really.
