November 2020 PS Plus Games | News

It’s almost that time when the air is filled with rapidly discarded packing materials and the smell of factory-fresh plastic! As the next generation of gaming (finally) arrives this coming month, Sony are giving away a brand new next-gen game to put their bouncing baby console through its paces! Below are the free games up for grabs for PS4 and PS5 owners in November.

Don’t have the time or space to indulge in the titles on offer? That’s no reason to miss out! Simply add the Plus titles to your library and play them at a later date, as long as you’re up to date with your Plus subscription of course.

Bugsnax is a delightful first-person adventure from the creators of Octodad, set in the colourful world of Snaktooth Island – the home of the legendary half-bug, half-snack creatures, Bugsnax. Invited by intrepid explorer Elizabert Megafig, you arrive to discover your host nowhere to be found, her camp in shambles, and her followers scattered across the island alone… and hungry!

Discover, hunt, and capture all 100 different species of Bugsnax using a variety of contraptions and bait! Explore the diverse biomes of Snaktooth Island to track down and reunite the inhabitants of Snaxburg. Stuff your new friends with Bugsnax to customize them with countless new looks.

Bugsnax was one of the highlights of Sony’s first PS5 reveal so it’s fitting that they’re using it to showcase the power of their new console. It is the first of a wave of cross-generation games though, and that makes things confusing because it’s only free on PS5, meaning that PS4 owners will have to pay to play.

Available from November 2nd.

If the lure of a shiny new next-gen experience doesn’t appeal, how about a solid-gold blast from the past? Monolith Games’ first take on Tolkien’s landmark franchise was something of a sleeper hit, melding Arkham-style combat with Assassin’s Creed traversal and action-RPG character progression. The standout feature of Shadow of Mordor, however, was the Nemesis system: a complex and novel mechanic that randomly enhanced both defeated and victorious named opponents to challenge players. The potentially endless supply of unique adversaries created individualised experiences, even populating player games with enemies from their friends lists as revenge missions.

Receiving critical plaudits aplenty and shifting a truckload of copies, a sequel was guaranteed and Monolith gladly obliged, turning everything up to eleven. Shadow of War continues the story of Talion, an undead ranger imbued with the spirit of Celebrimbor, creator of the ‘one ring’. Capitalising on his victories from the first game, Talion seeks to create an army (using the improved Nemesis system to recruit ork, uruk-hai and goblin followers) that will rival Sauron’s own and wage war on the dark lord himself.

While generally positively received on release, critics and players took exception to a pervasive micro-transaction system that locked content behind paywalls that were only otherwise accessible via endless grinding. The good news is that Monolith have since removed all of the microtransactions, restoring the game to a much more player-friendly state.

Available from November 2nd.

Continuing the indie darling vibe kindled by Bugsnax, PS Plus members will be able to download the highly praised 2D explorative platformer, Hollow Knight. The monochromatic masterpiece won over many fans back in 2017 but if you missed it, now has never been a better time to jump in with the Voidheart edition. The exquisite gameplay of the original game is bolstered by 4 (count ’em!) giant content packs that contain all-new quests, terrifying boss fights and brand new abilities to equip as you platform and battle your way across Hollow Knight‘s expansive world.

In Team Cherry’s engrossing 2D side-scrolling explorative platformer, descend into the sprawling underground world of Hollownest to battle tainted creatures and befriend bizarre bugs. Unlock new skills and tailor your power sets to fit your playstyle to help you explore twisting caverns, ancient cities and deadly wastes. Uncover a kingdom’s ancient history, taking on obver 40 epic bosses that’ll challenge your combat and platforming skills as you strive to solve the mysteries buried at its heart.

Available from November 2nd.
