The trailer for an upcoming FMV game by Wales Interactive and FMV Future, entitled Gamer Girl, appeared on Twitter and their official websites recently. However, the video has since disappeared, one day after the announcement.
In it, you play as a moderator for a streamer known as ‘Abicake99’. As one of her trusted friends, your goal is to delete any harmful messages that may crop up, and make decisions on what she should during streams, whether she’s playing games at home or talking to people outside. It was co-written and improvised by the lead star, Alexandra Burton, who spent four years interviewing streamers for inspiration.
Feedback online, however, seems to be less than stellar, with both men and women joking that the game is about ‘simping’ (i.e. being submissive and excessively supportive for women, in a desperate attempt at getting attention or sexual favours from them).
After the Tweet was uploaded by Twitter user Rod Breslau (@Slasher), Wales Interactive said in a statement on Twitter: “Gamer Girl is about the impact user comments and actions have on a streamer’s mental health and wellbeing”, and described it as “an empowering story of a female streamer who, with the help of her moderator friend, battles the trolls and — overcomes— the toxic characters in her stream…”
The game is heading to Steam, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch in September 2020.
