WayForward Announces Upcoming Ports & Physical Versions of Classic Shantae Games | News

Independent development studio WayForward has recently announced that, due to popular demand, two entries from the action-adventure-platformer Shantae series are making their way to consoles later this year.

Shantae was released on the Game Boy Colour in 2002 in very limited quantities to rave reviews. It’s become quite a rarity among collectors, and is also deemed an underappreciated classic by retro gamers. The sequel, Shantae: Risky’s RevengeDirector’s Cut is the sequel, and will be digitally making its way to the Switch and Xbox One. Originally released on the DSi in 2011, an upgraded version of the game was first released on PC in 2014, and PS4 a year later, with updated character portraits, improved fast-travel mechanics, and an unlockable Magic Mode.

Not only will both titles be making their way to the Switch digitally, but they’ll also be physically re-released, courtesy of Limited Run Games. Even better, authentic reproduction cartridges for the Game Boy Colour will be available for players to experience Shantae on the original handheld device. Preorders will begin in September, with additional specifics to be announced at a later time.

The Shantae series is renowned for its Metroidvania-inspired level design, humorous writing, luscious visuals, and catchy soundtrack, to name but a few features. The eponymous Half-Genie heroine can use her magical abilities to cast spells and transform into animals. In each title, she must use these special powers to traverse through dangerous locations in order to thwart the nefarious pirate Risky Boots from endangering the mystical world of Sequin Land.
